In this program, your students will learn how to recognize the correct maple trees, how to collect sap, and learn what the ideal weather conditions are for optimum sap flow. They will watch a demonstration on the boiling process and see how sap is made into syrup. Finally, each student will get to help make maple sugar candies to take home with them.

Our hands on activities encourage the students’ participation. This is important to children because they develop observation skills that they can use in all areas of their lives. This experience also helps students to develop respect for and an understanding of nature.

This class is great for all age groups and will be altered according to the students’ age.

The trip will be approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours long.  Please call and reserve the date you want by January 1st, 2009! (Classes offered Monday-Friday throughout the month of March.)

At Cascade Farm School we share the farm with students of all ages. We seek to share the concepts of community, sustainable agriculture, responsible decision making, accountability, and a connection with the land that feeds us. Many of life’s most valuable lessons can be taught by immersing children and young adults into the life of a working farm.

Younger students can understand their food source by potting plants, picking vegetables, or watching a maple sugaring demonstration. Other students can experience the various tasks and chores at a farm including feeding and caring for animals, working in the fields and gardens, and preparing meals in the farm kitchen. In the past students have assisted in building repair and construction projects, soil management, irrigation, and pond study. We conduct day visits for students as well as overnight extended stays for a truly hands on farm experience.

Our goal is to allow all who come to the farm, to gain a sense of ownership; of the farm, of their food, and of the vital importance that farming is to our existence. We seek to provide a forum and model for education, engaging people to understand and take responsibility for the source of their food supply. For our part, we are proud to share these lessons in the belief that farming, although endangered, still has many vital lessons to teach all who are willing to learn.
